We have a 25 foot trailer sailer witha Yamaha 8hp 2 stroke in a well.
How many hours to the gallon are likely - ball park?
We hope not to motor much but need to know what size tank to carry.
Thanks

as big as you can live with without it interfering with sailing the boat.

I used to have a 5 gall OBD tank + 2 5 ltr cans spare for my Mercury 7.5 Sailpower. Average - used to last me the weekend easily around solent ... as long as I wasn't doing Beaulieu / Newport etc. too much with the motoring.

I had a Yam 9.9 on a heavy 21 footer, which averaged around three quarters of a gallon per hour at around 3/4 - 7/8 throttle. An earlier boat had a 6hp Yam and I seem to remember it went around .6 galls/hour. On a standard 5 gallon outboard tank that gave around 6.5 hours for the bigger engine and 8 hours for the smaller one. Yours should therefore fall about half way between the two.

I have a 5 gallon (plastic) tank for a 6hp Evinrude which I reckon uses about ½gallon per hour.

It is a bit difficult to stow on a small boat and as I tend to keep it full I have rather more petrol on board than I need for most of the time. Also lots of expensive 2T oil mixed with it.

Next time it gets stolen I will probably replace it with 2 smaller tanks. That'll cost more but I will only fill and take the second tank when I'm likely to need it. Two small tanks will also be easier to stow.
