How much of a premium does a ex-royal yacht fetch?

I see from another thread that Princess Anne's rather tasty R36, Blue Doublet is for sale at Rustler in Falmouth.....

http://www.red-ensign.com/rustler-36

There is another 1992 yacht for sale at the same place.... with a lot more funky blue water gear on board for £75k.......

Blue Doublet is "Looking for Offers..."

So clearly they want a premium for the privilige of using the same Jabsco as HRH....

How much would you pay for that?

Would any proper sailor actually pay a premium due to the previous owner being a HRH?

The main reason the yachts is a good buy, in my opinion, is that it is being sold directly by Rustler. I think this is the only time they have traded in and sold a preowned Rustler.

The premium, if any, will be because they will have done the refurbishment and boat preparation using their own staff.

Worth having IMHO.

I have it on good authority that the ad was going to start with "one careful lady owner..."

I think I have seen Rustler flog used R36's on Red Ensign before.....

Certainly looks tidy, and you'd expect the maintenance budget to be met with deep pockets (can't imagine HRH with marigolds on doing a touch of antifouling). Looking at the instruments on deck though, it doesn't look like any upgrades have been done over the years:o.

There was a boat at the Maritime museum in Falmouth a couple of years back that had a royal connection... it was a present to HM if I remember, for her silver jubilee? built on the IoW perhaps? Maybe that's where this Rustler will end up. Nice looking boat though.

A nice enough example immaculately presented ( ahem apart from the headlinings up front, I expect those have been done by now though)but these boats are built slightly to the idiosyncrasies of their owners. In this case the chart table is quite different. I bet the engine hours are v low. One owner boats are often IMO the best bet.

Rustlers do not own Red Ensign. There are lots of Rustlers on there, but they are privately owned.

I have seen Rustlers on the Red Ensign site being sold which were at the Rustler yard.......

I know they dont own Red Ensign... but they seem to be the broker of choice for boats passing through the yard....

Actually, Red Ensign have a virtual, unofficial monopoly on brokering Rustlers. To my knowledge, virtually every one sold in the last 10 years has been private, or via them. There have been a few exceptions, but not many.

There are a lot of Rustlers based in Falmouth and around there. In addition, many owners choose to winter there and combine it with yard work. The boat yard, although not operated solely by Rustler is very secure, clean and friendly. My boat was there last winter.

So, the boats are there, Red Ensign are there and they work hard to look after Rustler owners. That's why Rustler always recommend Red Ensign as their preferred broker.

Does this boat and the new R44 enable Rustler to put the Royal moniker on their headed paper? Should imagine that would go down well in some export markets.

All the overseas stuff is done by email, so no need for headed paper. :)

Rustler have done a fair few adverts, press releases and newsletters covering the deal, so I guess most of the overseas markets know of it.

Interestingly, Rustler have done well overseas with the new Rustler 24 daysailer, but only a very few of the new cruising boats have gone overseas in recent years.

Perhaps they have missed a trick.

HRH was clever enough to skip having teak on her side decks I see.. I guess that's what private education gets you;)

Don't demote her, she's not a Lady, she's a Princess. I'm sure your pals at Country Life could explain the difference.

I am not, I am simply quoting what I had been told......

Who said I was pals with anyone at CL? However they are probably more friendly than the two people on a certain stand that I spoke to when I went to introduce myself at the show .... It was an association stand.

Mmmm, rubber dust in the engine bay.

She is currently ashore at the Rustler factory and has just undergone the usual 'Rustler treatment' to show her at her best.

Maybe they should show the pictures after the "Rustler Treatment". Nice boat but I wouldn't pay a premium for the association, but I can see why some would value this and adjust the price likewise. If it is lightly used it could represent very good value though.
