Hi, I have a 35 ft yacht that I need to transport from Penzance to portsmouth. I would do it myself but as I'd only be able to sail weekends I'd probably rack up quite a few marina bills in the process as I reckon it would take 3 clear weekends to complete.

Does anybody have any idea how much it is likely to cost? / have any recommendations of who to use?

Happy to receive pms from any delivery skippers reading this.

If you leave Friday night with a strong crew, you could be in Pompey before it gets dark on Sunday.
Just time it for a fair tide at the The Lizard, The Start, Portland and Hurst

Plank

If you are doing the trip in one hit, it would be best to keep far enough out so not to have any concern about the tidal gates you mention. Foul tide will be unavoidable but staying well off shore will minimise the strong currents and races found along the south coast.

dedwards,

you don't say when you need this done ?

I do not hesitate to recommend Chris Brunt at Atlantic Yacht Deliveries, http://www.atlanticyachtdeliveries.co.uk/

Yes he is a chum, he also happens to be the best sailor I've ever had the pleasure of sailing with, one of very few people I'd trust to do anything they liked with my pride and joy !

A thoroughly good, down to earth guy, too.

Dont even need a strong crew - 2 people will do. Its 190 miles and in a 35 footer you should easily average 5kn so 38 hours.

If the yacht is new to you, then any sensible delivery skipper will want to be sure that it is suitable equipped safety wise, in fact the'll want to do that anyway, but perhaps more so if you do not have any sailing experience of the boat. If you decide to skipper the passage, then I hope you too would want to satisfy yourself that yacht is suitably equipped, particularly including a certified liferaft.

At the moment I am free Thursday- Sunday. Through the night sailing/motoring. I would suggest - the cost would be a tank of fuel at least depending on your range. As the boat is 35ft delivery would be £50 per day for a newly qualified skipper (they are good because they triple check everything). £100 per day for a skipper who has perhaps 10,000 short delivery miles completed and anything between £101-£200 for a pro.

Hope that helps - check out UKSA or any of the big companies and go for skippers with engineering backgrounds if they are newly qualified.

Hope that helps.

Like I said - I am free Thursday - Sundays. After xmas

£50/day?

Your having a larf!

Wouldn't get the office tea boy doing it for that, let alone anyone calling himself a 'Skipper'!

It might help your quest, if you posted details of boat, including condition/recent survey.

Money aside its hardly an epic journey. Thats not too say it couldnt be sporty but chose your weather window and its a very pleasant downhill cruise - lets not over egg it. As with anything if its your job expect to be paid a fair rate, but the rate is not because its a challenging passage.

So much is a fair rate to be willing drop everything to go to Cornwall as soon as there is a weather window, work continuously for the duration (being on standby even when asleep), in 16 hours of darkness per day, on a boat you've never sailed before. Even at minimum wage, its about £400 plus travel costs.

Do it yourself. I did the trip singlehanded in a Centaur and passed Portsmouth after something like 30 hours sea time! I stopped for a few hours in Salcombe for a kip and to recharge the batteries (Had been sailing since the Scillies with only an outboard for generating)
If you time it right you will have a following tide through all of the tidal gates which is an absolute joy.

Hi

I used to first mate for PYD Professional Yacht Deliveries. Every skipper they used that I sailed with was excellent.

As has been said it can be comfortably done in just over 24hrs but they would want time to check the boat prior to departure and give you a report on any issues identified.
If getting it delivered ensure you get a "proper" skipper - it's a valuable asset
Regards
Adam

Biggest cost will be the travel for the skipper and two crew. Unless your doing the crewing and just want a skipper. Add on food for three, diesel, skippers wages.

Best to find a few local mates and do it yourself over a long weekend

The thing is, and I got the impression it's what the OP is trying to avoid, is that while it should be fine over a couple of days, if things don't go to plan - unlikely in sailing we all know - he may well end up with the boat in somewhere like Brixham marina, chewing through his wallet like a bored labrador...

Also as he can't drop work and go with any weather window, it means organising the weather to suit a weekend, that usually works well doesn't it ?!
