I am debating between re-engining or have a good service. I don't have the time to do a full overhaul myself but has anyone an idea of how much someone would charge. Any recomendation for someone in East anglia

If the engins are in good order corrosion wise i do an overhaul its not that difficult,i had a pair many years ago and they just needed oil change and the carbereter jets cleaned properly to run perfectly, the rest is a very solid simple engine

The out drives are also reliable they should make a healthy "clunk" when changing from forward to reverse, just keep them up when not in use and check the oil

They dident use more petrol than an equivalent Diesel. To re engine would be very expensive and with out drives worse still!!!If your Volvos have been even half looked after they will go on forever!!The legs need a bit more care but if sounding nice dont touch

Our last boat had that engine, new risers were quite expensive as the engine had to come out.
I later learnt that you can buy "collars" to go over the coroded ends.
IMO a full service for the engine and leg should see change out of £1000, how much change may depend on what the engineer finds wrong, but a good solid lump. worth investing in electronic ignition if an older model.

Hi Trouville,

You said "The out drives are also reliable they should make a healthy "clunk" when changing from forward to reverse, just keep them up when not in use and check the oil".

Do you really mean the outdrives should be in the 'up' position ?

I was always told the bellows were less stressed if kept in the 'down' position.

Or is this a Volvo/Bravo drive thing ?

Tom

Well that what i wondered i was always a bit worried about the "rubber" but its quite safe it dosent "strech" just bends, thats what its designed for and it it began to crack due to lifting the outdrives it would be time to change them anyway

I had a pair on a Trojen we had for a two years,i certainly wouldent have left them down when not needed for a while just think of all that dangerous salt water!!

Ive seen outdrives left down where the prop has "disolved"!!!!!!!!!I thought they were a good idea and made manovering amazing!! Later we bought a Bertram 25 and now a 28 with shaft drive.

The only small problem we ever had with the volvo was a jet blockage,we paid a mechanic £80 to clean them two mechanics in two different ports and a third we asked what it would cost quoted £80,none did the job propely. In the end i took the carbs apart and blew through each jet replaceing it i think it cost about £11 for a carb kit???

I mention the mechanics and price becouse it made me think it was something that happend often???

Never had any trouble after that and the engins sound sooo good i certainly woulden replace them, buy another boat yes but not re engine

I have to post again as im timed out to edit

I was thinking today if i found a chris craft 26 with a pair of these volvos in id buy it(depnding on the price!!!)Reliable, spares that can be found at non boat prices and yes electronic ignition NGK plugs and regulare service and what a great engine.

Diesels are less expensive to run but when cursing the boat dosent make long passages every day.Today Petrol is about 20 to 30% more than diesel. They both use about the same amount for the same performance

But a petrol engined boat today costs a lot less than a diesel powered one!!!Uses less start batteries less oil changes less fule filters etc
