Today i wanted to cut a quater wave diapole? That is i think i do! Last time i wanted an antena for 80m it wouldent fit being to big and i managed to resonte the back and for stay!! (wooden mast) then i had a biger boat and better tunner!!I cant remenber the lengths for 3750megs???

As all my anntena books have stuck together with damp?? I cant see how they got wet???I went to look for practical wireless this costs £40 pear year sent to Europe!! Thats almost £3.50 for EACH mag!!!!!! Who can aford those prices!!

When i went hear:

http://www.webscribe.co.uk/webscribe-bin/viewer?templatename=webmenu.wm&belongsto=313

I found the same groupe sell PBO Yachting world and YM finding the price of Practical wireless a lot!! I looked for the subscription price of PBO then the others but each time got "error"???

How much dose a subscription to PBO or YM cost today????

The last PWireless i bought cost £1.20! Umm then the ARRL antena handbook cost £9.10 today £16?? If PW costs £2.40 why dose a year subs cost £40???

I wanted HF Antennas for all locations (RSGB)by LA Moxon G6XN

Also Simple amateur band aerials by EM Noll (used to cost £1.95) This is a really great book for makeing anttenas for the boat!!!

These last two i cant find?? Are there any amature "Ham" can help???

How much dose a sub to PBO cost?????Seems my prices are outdated odd that all the mags are owned by just one group now???

Quarter wave dipole is no good at all

What you need is a half wave dipole. On 80M the length is approximately 132 ft fed in the centre.

If you need a little bit shorter the G5RV antenna at 102 ft is pretty good and works reasonably on the higher frequency bands as well.

You can use a quarter wave end fed aerial on 80M, thats about 66 ft long. You will need to ensure that you have a very good earth with the end fed for it to work.

The half wave dipole should work directly to the xmitter without a tuner. The G5RV and the end fed will require an ATU

Hope this helps

Thats amazing!! Then Practical wireless is two expnsive!I used to buy it for the ads! And book shop.Perhaps i could subscribe to PBO just to get in touch with current equipment and prices??

The reason i want a quater wave is for the size!!! I agree its difficult! Last time i made a quarter wave for 3750megs i couldent get my SWR to a safe leavel on 4 megs!!! It was very sepcific.I was useing an MFJ versa tuner even for 3750 it was quite a job to tune!

Im not a fan of the G5RV!! on land im a longwire usere!! They can realy radiate!!I once used a 4km telephone line along the canals!! I peddeled along and the supporting metal

cable was comtinuous, i just cut the insulation and soldered a a connection that worked even though it wasent very high!!

The best matching on 80m was when i took a wire from the mast head to the sea wall and a counterpoise! Not very practical!

132 feet!!! I can manage 32 foot! or perhapa a 60 foot inverted "V"??

Thanks no idea about the books??

See your problem.

One possible solution may be to use a dipole but include a loading coil in each leg.

If you do this probably best fed with balanced feeder.

One thing that may help is a programme called MMANA. Free download from net - allows you to "design" all sorts of antennas and does all the hard sums for you very easily.

OOO Thanks!found it! Havent gone to the site but got the link!

This summer will be the lowest propergation! Now its quite badish last night at 2am i just put the radio on tunes around 80m and just by the beacon found a group! Two were 5/9 and 5/9 + 20dbs!!! The third was 3/3!! Dificult but came up by getting on for 3am to 5/7!!! The others were running 500w! One was an MO with a Foxtrot call liveing in France the third was running 10w!! They were discussing if it was really 10w!

They had 22v pep which they kept getting 1w?? Anyway my "break break" wasent heard another breaker was heard but my swr was off the scale i had reduced power to 30w!!!

I was useing a diapole from the mast head cut for 14310 megs!!Theres not much on 20??? Though i havent been listening much

I went to the RSGB site antenna books cost a fortute!! Marketing¨!!!

HF antenners for alllocations byMoxan cost me £6.17p its now over £16!!!!!!I was also amazed to find rev.Dobbs still writeing! He put out some good plans for QRP rig!! Sadly @£41 pa im not subscribing to PW!! PBOs less!!!!!!!!! Both are FULL of adds but PBO is much thicker almost twice the pages!!

What about this for wi-ri anttenas and amp???

http://www.hyperlinktech.com/web/24ghz_b_indoor_amplifier.php

They have a yaggi for £29 not to bad!! Off to look at that site thanks!!

Re: How much dose a years subs to PBO cost??Are any Amature radio hams

Been pondering the same question for my latest boat and a ham friend who is much more technical than me reckoned I could make a 12m end fed tune (with a simple MFJ tuner) to 3750 by inserting a home made coil ( piece ferrite, several turns wire ) maybe 2 foot from the upper end...

am going to give it a go, because I never got anywhere trying to match (on 80m) my 14m backstay on the last boat and I dont fancy using one of these mobile whips.

Re: How much dose a years subs to PBO cost??Are any Amature radio hams

yes! Im tring as well! I bought a balun for the center feed and put in loading coils so far it wont tune much beyond the cut frequencyon 80m!

Im now going to try an end fed whip!! Though i suspect the whip will be to long at the point it works!

I have an old ten tec rig and a MFJ versa tuner onboard (there huge!! but bullet proof)i want to set up an antenna first then replace my new trio 140s again with a small portable MFJ tuner

If something works ill post!!! Last night 80m was amazing!! 5/9 from the UK!!! but today it seems everyone uses an amp!! I was about to call break when they started discussing the drive needed for the linieas!! They were takeing about a station in Spain Barcellona who puts our 1.5 killowatts and had water cooled valves?? No wonder its 5/9 +!!

Re: How much dose a years subs to PBO cost??Are any Amature radio hams

12 metres of 2.5 mm copper wire

Coil in centre 36 turns of 2.5mm copper wire spaced 2.5mm on a 4 inch former

Better not to use ferrite on coils in aerials

Should resonate on or about 3.750.

If you put the coil 2/3 of the way up add 2 extra turns.

Assuming you connect from stern to masthead there will be a small gain in direction that the boat is pointing

The antenna will resonate very sharply so will need some trimming - should give a SWR of about 2.5 -3 to 1.

Re: How much dose a years subs to PBO cost??Are any Amature radio hams

Just tried winding 13 feet of wire around a 2 1/2 inch pvc pipe then a 30 foot wire to the mast head SWR 1:1 ?? Anyway thats what the meter said!! I tuned from 3200 to 4400 megs where i was up to about SWR 3:1

Yesterday i put a 60 foot wire from mast head to key and a second wire at about 45 degrees to harbour wall dident use coax just clamped the wires in the longwire plug on the versa tuner it wouldent work at all?? Then when i came back at 1.30am tried again it worked!! 1:1 over the whole band!!!

I was so amazed i had a QSO which went on to long! And stayed with the group untill 5am!!!Thats when my batteries reached 11v !!And i fell asleep untill the port capitain knocked to ask me to take my washing lines down!!!

Sounds like you re-invented a Windom antenna.

Pleased it work well.

Well done
