hi all
i have a small 4.8m rib with a self draining cockpit
and i am new to the boating world. can any one tell me what you would expect the normal amount of bilge water to be.
after about 30mins it takes a minute to pump out the bilge water, the float swith is new and has not yet come on automaticaly, apart from the time i forgot the bung?

as its a rib you dont have a bilge just the floor pan, unless you mean that water is getting into the hull which is a no no
when running its a good idea to let the elephant trunk down to get rid of any water that comes over the top and into the boat

Its a bit like the how long is a piece of string question, this one. Theoretically there should be no bilge water if the cockpit is self draining. A minute pumping with a tiny pump is only a few litres of water, but a bigger pump could be shifting quite a lot of water, in which case you have a problem.

You need to find out where the water is getting in. Assuming it is GRP, check first any fixture or fitting that is screwed to or through the hull. It must be properly bedded in sealant, otherwise water will get in. Any cracks, or splits will almost certainly cause leaks, and will need attention. The most likely source of the leak is probably the bung, which must be absolutely watertight.

Guess that depends on the type of RIB as my Avon has a flooding hull which fills with water when stopped for stability....
