AD41's at cruise consume maybe 33LitresPerHour each.
450L tank / 66 lph gives you 6.8 hrs cruising.
At 20kts, thats 136miles.
Deduct your reserve to get the range:
Allowing 10% reserve - 122miles
Allowing 20% reserve - 109miles
tx. I wasn't sure how big the fuel tank of my fairline targa 33 is. I just read that it's about 135 gallon, so that's not so bad. I need to go from Corisca toSaint Tropez, that's about a 100 miles.
DutchDan, if your range is really only 110miles is you need to be very careful Corsica-St Trp. I did this 10 days ago. The seas can be big, winds strong and flukey, and in a 33 foot boat you could spend some time at near displacement speed working your way over waves and swell. Personally I'd want 200miles nominal range, to cope with the extra fuel burn caused by a heavy sea. I certainly wouldn't do it in a boat with 110nm nominal range
If you decide to do it, you'll need to refuel and set off from the very top, Cap Corse. Also I think you should head north, say to Antibes. This will be a bit shorter than St Trop and also avoid you heading so much into the prevailing westerlies (which will burn even more fuel).
I once reaconed on a long trip, that my boat, same engines, but 8 tons,35ft plus. Did 1.3 MPG But course I would not risk this, so reakon 1 mile to gallon, then some spare, hence 100-130 miles on 150 gallons.
thanks for your reactions. I'm not sure about the fuel tank. yesterday i read that it's a 150 gallon, not 100. I will ask Fairline. Further on my boat is 5.5 tons. I'm going in august, so and will only go when the forecast is good!
I have a Fairline Targa 33 with twin 41's. Fuel consumption is 12gph for both engines at 20/22 knots. They have a 110 gal tank so if you say 150 mile range that will leave a safe reserve. But if you cruise at 28 knots they burn about 18 gph
I may be being a wus, but I think this is awfully tight fuel-wise for that particular bit of sea, and I would definitely head for the closest bit of the French coast, not St Tropez. Needs an excellent weather window too. Any technical or weahter problem could increase fuel consumption enough to make this very tight on fuel
I'd even consider a few plastic jerry cans lashed to the bathing platform, and a transfer pump, to give an extra 50miles nominal range
but when i won't be able to cruise 20knts but slower, then I'll use less diesel?
maybe i'll buy a jerrycan for safety. It's the first time that we'll go a distance like this with no land in sight.
If you can't plane, you'll have to drop right down to a very slow displacement speed to maintain any kind of economy. In choppy weather, this won't be comfortable, and of course, your journey time could easily triple... agree that jerrycans strapped to the bathing platform (hope theres no teak) could be a good move.
as per jfm, I would want a really solid weather forecast before even thinking about it...
