do you carry?

are you content to cruise with a general area chart and a copy of Reeds or do you not venture into an area without detailed charts of every harbour?

in an ideal world we'd all have all the charts but do you make do with what you can afford or stick to home waters?

smug b******s with worldwide electronic chart folios need not reply!!

Located in NZ - we carry the complete set of electronic NZ charts, approx 150 (don't use them all though /forums/images/icons/frown.gif).

I probably carry too many charts. I've got the admiralty charts for Solent,Dorset,Devo & Cornwall & Channel Island + Imray pasage planning & area ones for other areas. I'd not feel comfortable in rocky areas like Channel Islands,Scottish West Coast or Brittany without detailed paper charts.

We carry C-Map electronic charts for our entire normal cruise area. We also carry paper charts for the same area, passage charts and larger scale ones but harbour charts (such as are included in C-Map electronic cartridges) are not usually carried since there are chartlets on the mostly Imray charts we use, or they are in the pilots or almanacs (esp Votre Livre De Bord, covers Holland though English Channel both sides to Gibralter),

Please don't ask how often we actually correct the charts as I might get embarassed, but we do carry current Lights List data (Votre Livre De Bord), download amendments from Imray and print them out , and scan PBO changes for any of special interest each month.

I carry every chart for the entire planet on C-Map, except for the small scale North America charts. It's only 600Mb (and would be another 400Mb for the N. America if I had them)

For a longer cruise I'd be happy with just a wide scale paper chart and the port chartlets in Reeds/Livre de Bord. I wouldn't feel the need to buy small scale charts for every port.

In general I am happy to enter a new port that I've never visited before, in daylight, using just the CMap chart on a big colour screen. I do not usually feel the need to look at the paper chart too. Before I get flamed, I agree that it would theoretically be better to look at the paper chart too but I believe the risk reduction arising from using the paper chart is usually insignificant. Daylight, eyeballs, commonsense and CMap will get you into most harbours on the planet with an acceptable degree of safety, imho

We just cruise up and down the Solent with trips to the Nab and Chi etc. . We have the Admiralty liesure set for the area and find them pretty good. Besides they are something to look at in the winter in anticipation.

I feel lost without proper charts. I make sure I have enough to give a good depth of detail plus a good overview. In the end, like Jimi, too many. Every few months I catch up with the corrections.
Also carry Imries for planning. In the end these are the ones that spend most time on the table.
For the Firth of Clyde round to Mull I have 28 Admiralty charts and the corresponding Imries - 3 I think.
That's a hell of a lot of money, when I think about it. So I won't.

Paper charts for the area from The Thames to Scilly Isles and as far south as Cherbourg and on down to Isle de Yeu. A combination of Admiralty, Leisure and Imray, I tend to replace these every 5 years or so when re-visiting an old haunt. Plus 200 or so left over from Atlantic circuit, out of date but still good for memories and as back up when I get the nav seriously wrong. Then electronically, 120 ARCS charts covering the Channel area plus North sea. Only the ARCS charts are up-to-date which I do yearly.

I have in the past gone into unknown ports using pilots and almanacs.

About 8, counting 3 small craft folios as one chart each.

That lot gets me English coast from N. Foreland to Plymouth, French side from Le Havre to Channel Islands.

I have charts now from Portpatrick to Brighton, including Ireland (E), Imray, Stanfords and Admiralty.

I used only to buy Admiralty but now I buy what takes my fancy, who has the best harbour plans etc. Used the Stanfords special offer in YM, I think, to buy 2fers to cover the full channel,

I actually quite like the Stanfords passage folios. All I need now is to go down there! Wanted to go this summer but the weather beat me back!

I carry too many, I have so many corrections to do this winter it is frightening, I wish they would stop building bloody windfarms and dropping weather buoys all over the place /forums/images/icons/frown.gif
