How long is a \"Cable\"

Have often heard the phrase "Cable" being used in the context of measurement - but how long is it?

Am guessing it is Imperial and not metric?

Cheers,

C

Re: OK then, what\'s a rod, pole or perch? nm

<font color=blue> A rod is a gun, a Pole is an eastern european gentleman and a perch is a striped fish with a spiney back.

Re: How long is a \"Cable\"

Although officially defined as one arcminute at the equator, it has been defined since 1959 as 6076.12 feet (coincidentally this is exactly 1852 metres, though the imperial is the official definition I believe).

So, to answer your question - 185m

Never quite long enough to reach the socket, in my experience...

the figs

6 feet = 1 fathom
15 fathom = 1 shackle
10 cables = 1 nautical mile
