How long is 37\'?

Reading the review of the Delphia 37 in this month's YW, I noticed that its LOA is shown to be 35'2" - some way short of 37'. Also on the panel is a Dufour 365 with LOA 34'. Bavaria 37 LOA 36'5" and a SO 36i at 35'10".

Whilst I'd hope that buyers would be looking at the real tech spec rather than just the brand/model name before buying, it seems odd to me that the marketing boys in boating are allowed to misrepresent in such a way which would probably be illegal in other sectors.

Re: How long is 37\'?

I've never quite understood why European boat builders elude to the length in feet when naming the boat at all.

I know Gibsea went through a spell of using metric names (Gibsea 92 = 9.2m LOA), but why do Beneteau/ Jenneau/ Bavaria etc still use 32, 34, 393 etc...?

Re: How long is 37\'?

I can hear it now, in the bar "actually we have a 37 footer you know"

To the harbour master or marina manager "Oh! Shes only 34 foot, ignore the logo on the side!"

Optimistic measuring/naming flatters the owner's ego whilst allowing the marinas and HMs to rip off an extra quid or two in fees. Maybe it is a BMIF policy designed to favour their boatbuilder and marina members?

Why too pray are the likes of Dufour, Bavaria, Benneteau, Jeanneau Halberg Rassy, Malo et al allowed to use Imperial measurements when our local market traders are fined for selling potatoes by the good old lb? Oh yes - they have aspirations to sell in the USA, so that is OK then, I'll tell Billy the greengrocer to claim he is after export sales.

Re: How long is 37\'?

The review of the HR36 gives an LOA of 10.87m which is nearer 33' than 36. So they are all seemingly playing the same game.

My Bav 40 had an LOA of 40'10". It's not made anymore but was superceded by the Bav 41, which I suspect is the same hull, 'dressed up' by the salesmen! Perhaps it should be called the 43?

Re: How long is 37\'?

But then there was the Bavaria 34 which was actually 10.8M and therefore 35.43 feet long -this allowed them to turn it into the Bavaria 36 by modiying the plug. They then told everyone that had a 34 on order that they could not have a 34 but could purchase a Bavaria 36 for the same price (with cheaper interior) and everyone was happy .

My calculation make 10.87 mtres 35 ft 6ins, I might be wrong.

Re: How long is 37\'?

Enuf already - I got it wrong - see post above. it's obviously an easy mistake to make since many boatbuilders do the same thing :-)

Wrong its 35.66 FT to be exact.

Re: How long is 37\'?

I think the Bav34 is actually something between 35'6" and 35'10" IIRC.... but as previously said, its 34 to the marina /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: How long is 37\'?

Definition I thought was "The length overall of the hull excluding bowsprit and other rigging if any, stem fittings, stern fittings, pulpits, any overhanging rudder and rudder hangings." Unless you're a boatbuilder or a marina natch.

10.87m = 35.663 ft

certainly not nearer 33 ..... sorry about that ...
