I have a 30ft Steel boat fitted with a cruising chute, how do I work out how long a spinnaker pole to fit?

so long as it projects about 18" beyond the forestay from its mast ring (or track) it should be fine unless you intend to go serious racing in which case I hand you over to the tweeking experts !

Although quite what you need a spinnaker pole with a cruising chute is a little baffling...

J = forward face of the mast to the forestay @ deck level measured horizontally is good enough

The one problem with a Telescopic pole is the weight and the cost. As has been mentioned if not using as a Spinnaker pole the tube can be a smaller diameter so being lighter and cheaper then if buying a spinnaker pole.

I made my telescopic whisker pole from a B&Q TV pole and a rotary washing pole, the diameters were just right for one to slip into the other.
Plastic piston ends and locking pin from Force 4.
Cost me about 30 quid

As GoG says, a cruising chute is normally tacked onto the bow fitting, rather than on a spinnaker pole. Have you tried it like this?

Telescopic Pole
I supply 21/4" and 2" tube that slide nicely inside each other however it alway has been a problem with how to lock them in position, some on the market have many holes that give you loads of adjustment however I think
you probably only need 3 or 4 settings, out, 3/4 out, half way out and in. When its at its smallest length it is easy to store below deck. If anyone could come up with a simple locking system telescopic poles could be so much cheaper! The one problem you cannot get away from is the weight, especially on the larger yachts.
I think Telescopic poles are more suited as Whisker poles, diamater of poles can be smaller and you do not have the loads on the side of the pole when reaching with the Spinnaker pole against the forestay.

I agree with GoG and Bignick, your CC should be flown off a strong bow fitting with a block and a tack line back to your cockpit for easy adjustment.

Or better still a "Prodder" if you are able to accommodate one, then the chute is well clear of the pulpit
