How Hot is the Exhaust Temperature?

I have a 2.6kw generator powered by a Yanmar 4hp Diesel engine, it is all air colled, no water in sight, what is the temperature of the exhaust likely to be, measured at the point where the silencer exists to the atmosphere?

I am looking into adding a piece of flexible hose to the end of the silencer with a hose clip and need to know what type of hose i need to buy....what do we think, 300deg rating on the hose enough?

Nope

You are looking at 500 to 600 C and it could be higher if you have little airflow through the genny area, 800 to 900 C esp if the genny is loaded up.

Metal flex pipe is the way to go usually available in galvenised aluminium and stainless with the latter being the most expensive.

It also comes with prewelded smooth stubs and this can simplify construction of your exhaust as getting the raw flex pipe to seal is a PITA.
 
Surely that would make it red hot, no point of the manifold ever gets red, let alone the far end of the silencer...are you sure about that?

YUP

Actual exhaust gas temp can be as high as 1200C at max load as it exits the exhaust port. Some trucks and diesel RVs have exhaust gas temperature sensors [Pyros] and try to run between 500 and 600 C with 800 c seen a max value.

I think i need to get my thermometer out, im not arguing about the EGT being high, but i cant see the far end of the silencer being that high, one way to find out!
 
stick with metal as suggested

Heat will have been lost on the way to atmosphere, but still way beyond 300deg rubber hose being a good plan

we have a 7 kvA generator on the farm. Ex MoD, single cylinder Yanmar diesel. The exhaust is led through a spiral wound stainless flexible tube about 3m long, which has a glass fibre woven material round it. At the end of the pipe is a silencer / diffuser.


When the genny has been running under load for about 30 mins, it is not sensible to place any wood on the pipe or the silencer box, as it chars.

Many years ago when I had very little sense, I repaired the back end of an automotive exhaust system by soldering it. Melting point of plumber's solder is about 180C. The exhaust pipe repair melted within about 10 seconds.
