I'm not near a boat, but want to copy the same seat height for another outside seat. The sitting down at a table seats, not the helm seats, probably like a powerboat, onto which you usually put cushions - how high from the deck are those seats (without the cushion) ? oh, and how deep are they from the front of the seat to the back? Excuse the very bad-phrased question please...

My inside leg is around 29 ins. When I sit on the seat without the cushion I am nearer to the floor than if I sit on the cushion which is around 2 ins deep. I've noticed that this affects everything as when I sit on the seat without the cushion my wrists just rest on the table whereas if I sit on the seat on the cushion I can get my elbows on as well. I was always brought up not to put my elbows on the table so I'm not sure I should be admitting to this. When I am sat on the seat without cushions my knees stick further up than if I sit on it with a cushion when they are almost level. My knees are roughly in the middle of my legs - say 15 ins so with cushions thats around 17 to seat top so I'd be very tempted to say about 16ins. The other alternative is to get a tape measure and measure them but I'm not at my boat now either
I hope this helps.

Answer - part 2

This deals with the issue of front to back measurement.
You will remember that my knees are about in the middle of my legs. When I am sat with my back pressed to the back of the seat, my knees are somewhere near the edge of the seat - this means that the answer has to be a femur length plus a bit for the knee - well, half a knee because the bottom half is pointing to the floor or to be technical, in the vertical plane. I've just had my trousers off and the old knee aoppears to hinge roughly in the middle. When Mrs Fairbrother walked in and observed me inspecting my knee she was a little taken aback and has apparently reported me to the Head of the Department who wishes to see me at 16:30 hrs
Again I do hope this helps

Re: aha

Both posts very useful, thankyou. I await further info at 17:00 or thereabouts once you have explained the issue to the head of dept and compared inside leg measurements.

Just had a quick look in Iain Nicholson's Boat Data Book. He gives the following figures:

Seat height above sole: Tall Man - 470mm, Average Man - 420mm, Small Woman - 365mm

Seat width front to back: Tall Man - 520mm, Average Man - 480mm, Small Woman - 420mm

Just about to pop down to the boat, so I will try to remember to measure the cockpit seats.

According to my Macmillans book, seat heights etc for a 1.8m person should be
Floor to seat base 40cm (sitting) 36cm (slouching a bit) or 25 if really reclining and lounging around.
Seat back to end of toes, allow 87cm (sitting) and 116 (slouching)149 (reclining)
seat back height113 sitting, nothing given for slouching or reclining, but respective headrooms are 143, 126 and 101. Oh and cushions should be a minimum of 75mm thick.

Go on then I'll fall for it. What mods are you planning for the Leopard?? Trying to squeeze extra crew\fare paying charterers into the engine room or what?

ah well, nothing for the boat at all. It's for the balcony, sitting outside. I thort I wd make some reclining/slouching furniture seeing as all the available furniture in the shops seems not quite slouching/slumping enough for me - or indeed any mates who mite come round from time to time and want to slump/pass out.

So, another power tool opportunity beckons, with an excellent chance to use a power circular saw, a drill, AND get a new sander and a new jig saw (and don't bother with jigsaw jokes) plus lash it over with a load of varnish and then slap cushions on it, or get someone else to make them, cos I'm a bit crap at sewing machines.

I'll go for the super-slump 230 mm seat base height and then experiment with cushions a bit.

Blimey, tcm, I would have thought that with all the dosh you have and the small amount of disposable time you have available after spending hours on these forums, driving up and down to France/Italy, driving the L23 and being managerial, you would have employed a bloke to do this:) Wot 'appened to quality of life??
