I think what's missing here is recognition that different people have different night vision ability and different 'comfort' levels. I have a friend (co-owner) whose vision just doesn't work at dusk when I can still see quite clearly. Then there's comfort levels. There's plenty of drivers who don't like driving at night. Doesn't worry me too much nor does night-time navigation. I think it's much easier in an open boat (or from a flybridge) than through a windscreen. I do like to have somebody competent as crew to take the helm or watch the radar.

I can't agree with Brendan that you can see as well at night as during the day - that must be wrong. But, I don't see any problem for someone who does have good night vision in running at planing speed on a well known route.
