Just renewing my insurance and I am wondering how far out are UK coastal waters, particularly when crossing Lyme Bay when I recall being 15-20 miles out.

I believe it's 12 miles, but a crossing such as Lyme Bay would seem reasonable as accepted risk if conditions were benign. Why not check with insurance company to be sure? They'll probably say that's ok if boat is suitable. I'm planning to do Torquay to Weymouth in ours (16') this summer if opportunity arises... :D

Thanks.

Torquay to Weymouth in a 16 footer is adventurous . Did Poole to Torquay in my 19 GTS diesel in 2008.

We visited Brixham, Dartmouth and Salcombe in 2011 and plan to return this year

Taking the most direct route across Lyme bay max distance from shore should be around 10 nm but more likely closer.

Appreciate that tide, weather etc may put you a bit further out but not be much.

Robin, hope you have a few jerry cans on board lol

Yes, it would have be one of those "It's flat calm with settled outlook, let's go" moments! We'd take the inshore route around the Bill and probably detour inshore along the Jurassic Coast at least one way too - with a more direct Gung-ho blast the other way. :D

Andy, I have enough cans to carry 180L, but would probably take just one 55L in addition to the fitted 60L. I'm looking to fit the 55L in the bow permanently anyway and just fill for long runs.

I questioned my insurance company about this some years ago. The answer was quite strange.
I could cross the channel to Cherborg, enter the Grande Rade, and return to Britain. I would be covered.
If I dropped the hook in the Grande Rade or berthed in the marina, I would not be covered.
Weird.
