How Far North is Considered East?

Hi chaps,

I was just wondering how far north you considered to count as east.

I, for my sins, have landed in Grimsby and am a member of Humber Mouth Yacht Club. I haven't always been up here though.

I was in the early 70's teaching sailing at Ganges and in the late 70's on Essex Police Diving Unit and Marine Section as skipper of Alerts 2 & 3, and Watchful.

I also ran the 4th Dovercourt RN recognised Sea Scouts as Group Scout Leader.

I did my first Yachtmaster with Peter Phillips at Dovercourt in 1977 and was a member of Harwich Town Sailing Club. I was a Pilotage Communications Officer with Trinity House until HHB took over.

My name is Neville 'Robby' Robinson and perhaps I know some of you old boys, who would like to chew the cud, reminisce and swap sea stories.

Any way I've written more about me than enough, so I'll go.

Hi Nev

Was that the old sailing whalers? Not that I remember them personally but there are some members of the RNSA on the East Coast who do!

If you are ever coming down to the Southern part of the East Coast give us a shout. I only plan going as far north as Lowestoft this season, but next season who knows!

Hi there, That was a blast from the past. We used to sail the 27ft motor whalers but I prefered the 32 ft Cutters which had no engine and loose footed sail. You had to brail up (pull on the brail ropes that went around the leech from both sides, so the leech was drawn to the mast to shed the wind) which made it fun when coming to a mooring buoy. We usually had a crew of eight two or three of whom had any sailing experience in dinghies. It is a good way to learn how to tear your hair out without anyone noticing, but they usually got it after a few dozen touch and goes.

Hello Shmoo - I am so out of practice now, I am doing my Yachtmaster Offshore (shore based) for the third time, I last did it in 1988 and It is amazing what you forget after 22 years and how it has changed! Final exam next week and not looking forward to it.

Hi Sailorman - I did know a Bob Mugford, a decent bloke, but I can't remember too many details, was he with Trinity House or the RN?

Hi there Ken, fancy finding you on this forum, I was offered a berth, at Saltfleet, the other day but I had to decline it as our future plans have changed and we are planning to move to Harwich or Dovercourt again in the next 18 months.

Hi Ken,

The wife and I are looking to move down to Harwich to live ASAP, and I am hoping to join Harwich Town Sailing Club again if they'll still have people like me. I am twenty odd years older now and somewhat mellower, still just as thick.

I can't wait to get my boat down there as I just love the whole area from Thames to Lowestoft. I might be wrong but the sailing fraternity seems to be more welcoming there.
