Done the trip from Plymouth to river Severn and back. Also Plymouth to pool many times. Biggest problem with Bristol channel is lack of safe harbours. It took us months to get back, owing to bad weather and lack of time. Loads of toing and frowing with car and trains. I'd get out of Bristol and make Swansea if possible, or Penarth. Then about 90 miles to Padstow, need to get the tides about right. Alternative is Milford Haven,if weather turns crap, then maybe 40 miles across to Padstow. Or maybe straight round lands end. Depends on range. You need a good weather window for Lands end. Padstow Penzance or Newlyn about 50 miles from old memory. Penzance nicest but behind lock gate. Newlyn better, cheap fuel and out any time. But fishy type harbour. Penzance Falmouth about 32 miles or to Plymouth 64 miles. South coast is fairly easy but watch for overfalls on headlands. Esp lizard, Start Point and Portland Bill. Plymouth Portland Bill 73 miles. Pool maybe another 28 miles. Any more info... Just ask.
Thanks Haydn, just looked for my nav stuff, and its all down the boat...
Might be better to head Bristol/portishead -> watchet -> illfracome / padstow, if the weather is good, cos its all on the same side (and shorter distance), but agree penarth and swansea are better if the weather is pants. you can get fuel from watchet and padstow, not sure if illfacombe has fuel...
Was aiming at all weather, all or most tide, safe harbours. Theres loads of routes of course. Depending on range, sea conditions and time one wishes to be out there. It can be very tiering, especially down Bristol channel with few bolt holes!
Hell yes, i totaly agree, i was thinking 'quickest-lets-get-out-the-brown-water' (flat calm, etc, etc) route. - and lets face it, watchet sucks if you miss the flap by 10 mins... LOL
Now we know the boat. I'd be aiming at Bristol Padstow and get out of the crap fast. Depends on weather though. Then after rounding Lands end, it's just a jaunt, go as far or as little as one wants. Only lyme bay to concider and thats only 50 miles or so.
{not sure if illfacombe has fuel...} When I did swansea to Jersey 15knots a few years ago, took 24hrs there about, fuel was by can from garage, then another stop in a fishing port newlyn i think we got fuel from a tanker another trip was from Penarth, at 10 knots, we refueld in Falmouth,
My first boat only 25 foot I got in Plymouth and got to London after about 5 very happy days at sea, my current boat I bought in holland and brought over by sea and canals, I can never understand why people would put a boat on atruck, The possible damage is a very high risk INMHO.
This should be a great trip just allow plenty of time.
Yep, agree, but didnt think he wanted to mess around, just a delivery trip. But if he wants to have fun, then I would still go Falmouth in one trip, then mosey on along the coast, lots of lovely places to see. Just avoid any princess with a mad Lancashire lad aboard!
I mentioned the bolt holes cos, one, did not know wot boat, two. I had loads of trouble geting out of Bristol channel. Bad weather every time we attempted it. Agree. Bristol Padstow. But then Newlyn for cheapest fuel in country. Quick too. Then onto Falmouth or Plymouth, even Salcombe, all only short distances. Lyme Bay needs a bit of concideration. But a breeze after Lands End.
