During my search for a 30 to 35 footer, going for a song I fell over half a dozen 30' Dufour 30 Classic up for sale for £16k

Yes they are ex charter boats and the tax needs to be paid and yes they are in the Ionian Sea, so a long way away

but still this is at least 10 to 15k cheaper than local ones.

It might on the surface look a good deal but being ex-charter and no doubt v well used how much
are you going to have spend bringing her up to scratch. Also the cost of travel there & back to inspect
what might well turn out to be a duffer

I went to Trieste to look at a catamaran which was a lovely boat but was in need of too much work to make it worthwhile and the owner would not accept a realistic offer of half his asking price. Had a wonderful weekend there and a sail, but a hell of a trek to get from here to there and back in a long weekend. I would do it again but get more up front info and pictures before setting off.

Marine Axiom: It always costs more and it always takes longer than you think.
Also bear in mind that the delivery trip to the boats new home port may well be frustrating/interesting: boat unknown to you / adverse weather / stuff breaking...
I would not consider a boat further than 2 or 3 days sailing away.
Being East Coast based this meant northern France, the Low Countries and northern Germany.
Bought first boat in Belgium, current one in Holland.

None between private non vat registered individuals.

That having been said vat is due on a commercial transfer ie from a business ( A charter co ) to a private owner and the tax payable is then paid according to the tax laws of the country governing the sale.

25 percent on final sale price. Only worth buying if you intend keeping in area or are prepared for a long expensive trip back to UK. Something between 5 and 10k and 6 weeks to a whole summer depending in how you do it. Explains the low asking price - market is very limited.

Think again. Look over a nice quality built, maybe older boats, from private owners who already made upgrades, like rig and engine + cruising equipment, probably took good care and used her only for holidays. Who knows, may be some at better price, market is tough. Closer to home it may be a boat that spent more time out of water. No VAT to add.

Not that I'm against nice trip south, made a few myself, I have it closer... Then bought boat in UK, which was farthest trip for a boat that I made :o
