I have a Lofrans anchor windlass that destroyed its motor last year, have given up on getting replacement, its only the motor thats shagged the rest is fine.
I was wondering if I got a lorry starter motor of similar dims what electrically would have to be done to make it rotate in both directions hopefully controlably not just on and off.
Thanks
Keith

Surely it would be much, much easier to get your Lofrans motor repaired?

It's a project 1000 I dont think they are compatible but thanks, re the repair it was my first option but all the local rewind places took one look and backed off, they couldn't understand I didnt want the extra fancy bits repaired.
Thanks

There are several specialist electric motor firms you can Google-less than £150 will buy you a brand new motor and specialist varients can be built in-shaft length;shaft diameter;mountig holes etc.
I got one for my SL Seawolf surplus stock for £30!-it needed some fitting but otherwise no problems.

Don't think it would be a good idea as starter motors are only short time rated it would overheat in the time needed to recover an anchor

I'd keep trying the specialist motor rewinders/rebuilders. It would be very difficult to get a starter to reverse direction. You'd have to find a way of reversing the field winding supply whilst maintaining the stator suppl polarity. If I recall correctly, Lofrans have two lots of field coils and you switch between the two to reverse the motor... It's a long time since I looked in one so I might be mistaken in my memory.

The bearings will all be standard sizes in your old motor and the windings are easy for a specialist. Brushes can be matched or ground to fit and the armature can be tried up on a lathe and recut. Shot blasting will get rid of the old corrosion and with fresh shellac and paint it will look like new.

Lorry starter motors do a different job with different service characteristics. Not worth the hassle.

Are these people any use ?

Price is ouchy, though that reflects the duty cycle the motor is designed for.

This is also on ebay. Might be worth a look ?

I concur with the rewind shop route. It might need a clever rewinding specialist. Cuchilo had to send a big motor quite a distance but it was worth it.
