How does it work?

These fuel fiters in the form of a yellow funnel with a greenish central column which is the filter element. I have one and it works superbly stopping water and dirt entering the tank. But how does it stop water yet allow fuel to pass through?

I think it cheats. The element is made from spun polypropylene which is hydrophilic. This absorbs the water but lets fuel through.

The element is hydophobic, ie is not wetted by the water which then is trapped as droplets held by the realtively high surface tension of water
