All bits and pieces of internal brassware these days (such as my cabin oil lamp) seem to potted in laquer. Now this is fine in the shop and for the first year or so but as soon as you get a damaged spot in the laquer and it starts to corrode underneath, turning the brass green then you have a mess.

I should like to simply remove the laquer and polish the lamp evenly, so, how do I get it off? any ideas?

Thanks

Mike

If it's traditional lacquer you can get it off with alcohol. If it's a modern lacquer I can't help except to say that I've seen lacquer remover on sale in hardware shops, maybe that would do it.

I've used Nitromoors paint stripper in the past. Apply sparingly and wipe off with a rag. Use a soft brass bristled brush (Halfords) to deal with the more recalcitrant areas. Auto Sovosol or Brasso will remove any minor scratches.
