I have just bought a secondhand storm jib from Exchange Sails. Good value, not new but shape ok and the right size for my 36 ft boat (about 9 sq m).
However it seems a little on the light side to me for 30 to 40 knots of wind, which is what it is for. It was described as 10 oz Dacron when I bought it. This means it should weigh 10 oz per sq yd. However as it is a made up sail, I am not sure how to check this. The bagged sail weighs about 160 oz, but this includes bolt ropes, leech line, hanks etc.
9 sq m is about 9.7 sq yds which should weigh 97 oz, which may be ok. 10 oz Dacron would be well up to spec for a storm jib of this size.
Is there any other way to check cloth weight, such as thickness, or thickness folded a few times.?
Perhaps I am being fussy, but if the storm jib is needed I would like to be happy it is up to the job.
