Yesterday I was sailing in the Aegean when a car ferry was on a collision course with me. I was under sail and there was enough time for him to alter his course to avoid a collision. After watching the AIS I saw no change in his course so called him by name on the VHF. No response. So we had to gybe to avoid him. I would like to complain to BLue Star Ferries about their lack of look out and lack of response to the VHF

I can see past tracks on MArine Traffic but can only show two vessels at once by taking a Professional Subscription.
Is there another way to show both boats tracks on one screen??

I am on yacht Zebahdy 235003794 . Ferry is Blue Star Chios 240672000. Event happened on 15th June about 12.20 local , so 09.20 UTC near the island of Karpathos

Thanks

Why were you playing chicken with a ferry? We all know it's not a good idea.

You made a basic manoeuvre and nobody died, chill and enjoy a beer - life is to short to get all het up and upset your blood pressure.

Whilst I get your line of thought, I think the original OP is correct.

He was in a position to take avoiding action, if there appears to be no-one monitoring the AIS and no response to a VHF call, who was on watch?

If it's raised with the ferry operator and they take it seriously, they may have an investigation to see who, how, what, why and when etc.

Who knows what the outcome would have been if the other boat was not as alert as the OP......

I agree with both sides here. There was no collision so colregs worked, but on the other hand the ferry clearly wasn't doing their duty. The rules are there for a reason and larger boats and ferries should take their responsibility seriously, if someone had been injured I'd sure we'd all want to know why nobody was on watch so why not when someone wasn't injured?

I can track multiple vessels, but unfortunately yours is 'unconfirmed' on my system and shows you off Corfu, with no movement over the past 10 weeks. As Blue Star Chios is working the eastern Aegean, I guess it didn't happen here.

What system are you using? Zebahdy has not been in Corfu region for a couple of years.

My main concern about the "incident" was the uncertainty. Had I turned to go behind the tanker coming from my starboard side just at the time the person on watch decided to turn to go behind us, then we would have been in trouble + confused

Thanks

I wouldn’t rate the chances of an investigation too highly. I had a very similar situation with a sand dredger (which was not dredging) off the Belgian coast a couple of years ago. Collision course, no attempt at a course change, I passed close, saw no one on the bridge, called the ship, got no reply. The dredger belonged to one of the smaller Belgian dredging companies, so I emailed them explaining the situation and did not even get the courtesy of a reply.

We have an in-house proprietary system that is designed for commercial shipping so we don't usually cover anything without an IMO number. It picks up yacht AIS as well, but for some reason beyond my ken it is not getting the feed for your boat, even though we have it on our records. The last update before Corfu was off Lefkas last September. But you'll be pleased to know we only consider your vessel to be a medium risk.
