How do I replace these shrouds?

Hi All,

I'm replacing the standard rigging on my boat and I'm not sure how to get the shrouds out of the mast (see photo:

)

I'm guessing the rivet should be drilled out to remove the retainer (or whatever it's called) but last thing I want to do is lose it in the mast.
Can anyone give me a 'how to' guide?!

You will not lose it inside the mast if you drill the rivet out, because the head of the swaged fitting prevents it falling in. The ones on my boat are a bit different but I saw them replaced. The mast was out because some other shrouds could not be changed with the mast up because the spreaders had to come off the remove them. What happened with the ones a bit like that was that after drilling the rivet the fitting was pushed in a bit and turned sideways and the swage and fitting slipped out of the slot.

This photo shows the spreader root fitting and the slot for the mast fitted shroud after the shroud fitting had been removed

Yes Norman E is correct, the fitting comes out its own hole, then the wire can be pulled all the way out as the bottom stud fits through the hole in the fitting, when you put the fitting back make sure you use a Monel rivet, looks to be 1/4" and paste on the fitting as its stainless.

It looks like this

It will not fall off the wire terminal - so no chance of falling into the mast.
Drill out the rivet.
Push the "Round Stemball Backing Shell Tang" into the mast and turn it on it's side and pull it out.
Could be wise to replace while replacing the wire.

The fitting in the mast is pear shaped, think its a Z Spar or possibly Sparcraft (Old Isomat) Fittings now are not pear shaped but square on the sides so possibly cannot be replaced, we rarely found any problems with the fittings so unless the fitting is damaged do not worry about changing it.

Just one thought. I remember the rigger who did mine saying that when buying the swage terminals it is important to get the correct ones, as the radius of the ball end has to be the same as the internal radius of the mast fitting.

I can confirm this.
When I bought my SO32 the lower shrouds bent where they left the swaged ends which I insisted on having put right. Fox's Rigging were called in and they stripped it, replaced the coquelles - yes that's what they are called! - and said it had the wrong match of stem ball and coquelle and could not articulate enough. (I suppose the better solution would have been new wires and stem balls.)
I have seen other SO32s with the same special Jeanneau feature.

Brilliant! When I bought my boat, a Dufour 30 Classic it came with a detatchable inner forestay which was completely detached. The top fitting is just like the one shown in Knuterikt's photo. One of the items on the shortlist was to find out what was required to put this back in place, and whether or not I would need a rigger or not, so thanks, Knuterikt, you've saved me some time and now I know I just need a monel rivet and some paste! ( and a trip up the mast!)
