How do I mend this steering guage?

The one linked to the meter below wasn't working when I bought the boat. But now the flybridge one has gone too.

Anyone familiar with these? They're filled with oil (I discovered the hard way /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif )

Moving the arm creates no affect on the dial. Both dials have come to rest pointing to starboard. Have tried with electrics on and off but get no reading on my multimeter.

Any ideas?

These units are made by VDO.

The gauge is the same as a normal fuel gauge

and the sender is a resistance type. You can use a mulit meter to check that the resistance changes when the arm moves.

The meter can be checked by using a 500 ohm variable pot connecten inline with meter

Have a look

The data sheet is available on the net but I cannot find it at the mo here

That link doesn't work... /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

So I could just swap in a newer VDO model? Where would I buy one? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

You are a genius!

The units in there are about 25 years old, so I think it's time for a change. Am truly amazed that the current ones are identical in design. Unfortunately the site doesn't list a dealer in the UK. Any ideas on that?

Oh, I see you're in Johanessburg...

Just bought one from Furneaux Riddall -a dual sender that will run two guages. £124 inc postage /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

124 squid WOW

I have seen them on Ebay sometimes but I made one from a 500 ohm pot mounted on a stainless steel box filled with oil.
