You may get something from the back pages of all the best mags, failing that ring some charter companies up, although it,s quiet this time of year, if you are looking abroad then med charter may have something for you, contack Cor de roode he,s dutch or his wife Lisa, very nice people had dealings with them someyears ago over the purchase of a boat in Majorca.

I think you have to go there - wherever you fancy a start to/from. You don't indicate what size of boat. Don't think you have enough quals for a commercial skipper - need a commercial endorsement. But, from (say) Golfe Juan there are big 30+ metre boats who need crew. You need to be good looking and not a fat ugly git, otherwise nobody'll want you on board. Sorry, but that's how it is.

advice

Im not 2 bothered what size of boat i work on, although something not 2 big with only a few crew would b nice. what type of jobs would i b able 2 get with the qualifications i currently have. (rya level2, vhf, icc, day skipper shorebased and practical) If i was 2 go somewhere 2 find a job were would be the best place 2 go (monaco etc?)

Re: advice

I have a friend who did exactly what you plan- think he had fewer qualifications tho, but crewed for a while at £22k all found tax free for a year on a 50m as part of a crew of 30. I'll find out what he did. Think he started at Fort Lauderdale.

Golfe Juan is certainly one place where there are crew-finding agencies in the port for big boats. If you haven't done it before, RYA etc a bit irrelevant - it's not about navigation it's about cleaning the boat, fixing the drinks, cleaning the boat again, and then cleaning the boat. You should aim to be on a boat that charters otherwise bit boring to sit on a boat cleaning it all the time waiting for owner who comes aboard 4-8 weeks a year.

While bar ing around the canaries (la gomera)this xmas i found most marinas had a board somewhere that had post it notes from both skippers and crew looking for passage and/or crew. Most were very fussy and i suspect you would need to be if you are to spend 4 weeks in a confined space with well who knows. Most skipppers on the canaries to carribean leg had a long list of requirements ie.dry boat /no smoking no loony no autohelm so steer all time etc and the means in cash to repatriate yourself at other end of journey.

Ok first stop is the MCA they will give info about all the regulation changes which came into effect this February. Second you can try the UK sailing academy in Cowes which run a 17 week course ( PCST - Proffesional Crew and skipper Training.). First aid would be handy. Most larger yachts require you to do a fire fighting course now. You can try crew placement agencies but ninety percent of crew I know got their job by doing daywork and then being offered full time work as the season started.

As the others have stated your will have to start as a deckhand with your current qualifications. Which means cleaning, varnishing, cleaning and more varnishing.

I can give you some starter points for the Mallorca area but if you want to work in the UK then try maybe Enigma chartes in Southampton they often look for crew on their coporate charters.

Mr B worked on luxury yachts in the med before meeting moi. He just took off with a friend in a camper van down to Antibes and hung around the Bar du Port early in the seaon waiting to hear of jobs coming up from other crew members. In the meantime, he painted boat etc in the local yards to make a bit of money. Didn't take him long to get taken on as a steward, then a deckhand.
