How do i clean the air intake on a mercruiser?

I have a 4.3ltr mercruiser fitted to my boat and i've removed the air intake cover which sits on top of the carb.
Its around 8-10" diameter with a metal gauze which is looking a wee bit dirty but not blocked. I just want it looking like new again.
So, can it be cleaned? if so, what with? and what's its proper name,is it a flame arrester? i really dont know

swill it around in a dish of jizer, wash with water and dry, before replacing

It's a flame arrester. I clean mine by spraying carb cleaner through them and letting them dry. You have to dispose of the gunk properly and don't let the cleaner stay on your hands - use protective gloves. And don't breath the fumes. I don't know what Jizer is, but it might be more user-friendly /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Jizer is an engine degreaser so any make will be fine.
