I believe the old fashoned way was to suspend brushes in turpentine. However, I have had success with rape seed oil. This oil stops paints and varnishes from setting. Thin the oil with white spirit and throw the brush into the container. Next day, give a brief wash in white spirit to remove the oil, no need to clean the brush, and off you go.
I left my paint brush full of paint in undiluted oil, after painting the underside of my boat. Five years later I painted it again with the same brush. The paint had not hardened. The oil had thickened slightly, but not gone hard.
I have dipped brushes in this oil, and then given them a brief wash in white spirit before painting. So far I had no problems, and the top of the bristles have been free of paint.
Please note, the above oil was waste oil from the chip pan, that had been allowed to clear. I assume the fresh oil will also work.
This year I sucessfully painted a ceiling without getting drips down my arm. I diluted the oil with white spirit and poured it into the top of the bristles. This totally blocked all drips.
