Your advice please.

I am trying to replace the gypsy on a Lofrans Royal windlass. The 'manual' is unhelpful. Any ideas on how to release the main spindle. Do you need to shift the big Allen key socket on the top?

You also must remove the "Stripper". That is the horn shaped piece which is located blow, and in line with, the chain gypsy. Its function is to "strip" the chain off the gypsy so that it drops into the navel pipe and cannot wrap itself around the gypsy. It is held onto the body casting with 2 hex-headed bolts.

Here is a drawing. Lofrans Royal . The stripper is item nr: 335.

After removing that you only need to remove the wing nut and friction cone items 317 and 318. Then the gypsy should be completely free to pull off the shaft.

On no account remove item 503, it is not a bolt or a filler plug but is the spindle on which the upper bevel gear rotates.

I have one of these but the electric version. What I dont have is a manual. Are there any maintenance issues that I should be aware of ei does it need topping up with oil or grease or is it a sealed unit. Can anyone send me a copy of a manual I would pay any costs, is it indeed worth having.

Ah yes, removing the Stripper. When I did that the head of one of its bolts sheared off, quite easily, and leaving most of the threaded bit in place. Grrrr!

It was a stainless bolt in an aluminium hole with none of the usual protection, so I guess there wasn't much chance it would not corrode. Only thing I can suggest is that you give the bolt a good soaking with freeing agent and maybe some heat. Then if it comes out ok, replace the bolt with a brand new one.

I reckon the best thing to do when you buy a Lofrans windlass is to dismantle it and apply Duralac anti-seize paste to all the bolts and screws. Saves a lot of trouble when you come to dismantle it again.
