Hi everyone,

I've been looking around now for a while to see if I can find the AVS of my Gib'Sea 84 as I’m curious to know what it is.

Having been somewhat unsuccessful in my search I was wondering if anyone here knows the formula on how to calculate the AVS of a yacht?.

Can anyone help?

It should be pointed out though the the formula given is a very crude estimate which is likely to be wildly incorrect. For example, hull form has a big influence on AVS and freeboard is also a significant contributor - you will note that the formula takes no account of freeboard whatsoever, not even in any simple manner.

The is no simple manual method to calculate AVS.

Just as a rider to some of the earlier comments (which I agree with) using the formula, the AVS of my current boat is 295 degrees!!! Since most of us sail in Salt water, the necessary additive to the formula is ready to hand, ie a large pinch of salt!!

Re: A sound alternative

Haul JJ and Tome up to the top of your mast and rock the boat. Measure the decibel level of their screams.

Your AVS = (150 - Scream Decibels)

Yep, I appreciate it's a crude estimate it's more out of curiosity than anything serious.

I think good seamanship and a healthy dash of common sense should be applied to any boat that is where the secret of true stability lies :-)

Hi Captain Haddock

Is AVS the point of no return? I too have a gib'sea 84 and somewhere I have a graph I think the explanation is in french though, if I can find it i will post it on the forum, but don't hold out too much hope its taken me 2 attempts and half an hour to post this letter

Thats because everything is bigger in the US, and their circles have 720 degrees in them. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
