how clost to a sand bar would you sail ?

I plead the 5th amendment. Ahem.

But don't follow me.

Because my boat looks........

....like it ought to draw a lot more than it does.

It all depends dunnit? Classic risk assessment;

% Chance of running aground times consequence of running aground.

If its hard sand with waves breaking keep well off, if it's to weather & spending a tide sitting on it simply offers a chance to check the bottom, go as close as you like.

There can be counter currents & calm channels close in IF YOU KNOW THEM, but most people just tend to stay between the buoys in my experience. I regularly cut across sandbanks if I calculate there is enough water, but you must keep the e'sounder on until you are sure you are in the channel. As already stated sand moves most winters & often overnight after a good blow so don't trust charts.
