I need to buy something to cover the ends of the 3mm bolts that hold the navigation lights in place. As they are, the ends of the screw/bolt protrudes beyond the nut and will scrape anyone who brushes against the rail and the fitting. The trouble is I do not know the correct term for what I need. Googling bolt covers and screw covers gets me covers for the head of the screw or bolt.

Thanks for helping a newbie

Or you can saw them off flush with the nut and file them smooth.

If you use dome nuts you'll probably have to saw the bolts shorter as there isn't room for much extra length inside the dome. Before sawing, put an ordinary nut on the bolt first then the action of removing it afterwards will repair any damage to the end of the thread so you can get the dome nut on without cross-threading.

It may not be what you had in mind but dome nuts will solve your problem. You will have to shorten the screws a bit probably unless you just add them on without.

If you do shorten them, thread an ordinary nut on first then cut and then remove the nut.

Try also searching for cap nuts.

Look in A2A4 fixings

and Sea screw

If all else fails use nyloc nuts and cut all the excess thread off

Perfect!

Thanks for speedy advice. This is what makes this site great. It makes up for very unhelpful post in my attempt to sell a PBO almanac in the "For Sale" forum!

You might want to use a touch of light hold Loctite "Screwlock" because the first thing you know about it unscrewing is a splash and there isn't much thread.

FullCircle will now be slightly obtuse.

If you want to use normal NYLOC locknuts so your nuts dont come undome (as they can with Dome Nuts, then you can get Plastic end caps that can either fit over the whole threaded bit, or just a decorative/protective cap made from plastic.

Moss plastics do these, here:

Moss plastics catalogue.

available direct or through stockists all over UK/Europe.

Re: lakesailored

I realise you may have already had replies to this enquiry, but I would suggest using "Dome" nuts. They may also be referred to as "Acorn" nuts by ex-colonials.

AND regardless of what metal the bolt is ---- DO NOT LEAVE any filings or saw bits on deck ... Make sure every last tiny scrap is cleaned of the deck .... otherwise it will haunt you for years that corrosion / metal stain that will surely appear !! I know - I'm still trying to get rid of them on my deck after doing a couple of jobs !!

But yes ... Dome Nuts are the ones ....

Here's a piccie of them inside on my curtain holders ...

Very brave of you to put your e-mail address in the reply. I am afraid you will get spammed to death. You might wish to delete the post now I have your site
