how britain worked restoration brixham sailing trawler c4 8:pm

also c4 +1 at 9pm

Watched it-First Mate and I did some training on " Golden Vanity" Leaders smaller sister in Trinity Sailings fleet of Brixham Trawlers. Leader was at the Southampton boat show this year and very well she looked too. For those who may not know, the presenter Guy Martin, a very likeable Lincolnshire lad is a VERY quick IOM TT rider.

GM has a Lincolnshire accent :eek:
More like Coronation St

A full season's sailing advertised for next year, with one cruise fully booked already. Run by Trinity Sailing. My first offshore cruise was in her - Easter 1954! Hooked for life . . .

Jim,

thanks very much for that, good to know the old girl is going strong; never been on her, just admired from sometimes close by.

He's a bit Marmite, I think he's a great chap and an entertaining presenter.

I do think Guy was a little out of his depth in this one and he seemed much more comfortable in the earlier shows in the series where there was mechanical "stuff" for him to do.

I presumed he had been cloned using DNA recovered from Fred Dibnah's hat.

Thanks to OP for the heads up; as ever some of it interesting and some of it nonsense but all OK.

I sailed Leader in 2001 from Craobh Haven to Brixham via Waterford and the Scillies; great for the first couple of days then no wind until we reached Brixham which was very disappointing. Good to see that Trinity are living up to their trust status and doing the expensive stuff.

The point is that he is not on a bike ,he is presenting what could be an interesting series but ruins it with his inane commentary.

He does seem a very likeable lad but he is trying to be too "bloke -ish" and it is definitely irritating.

Anyway..should this not be in the lounge?

I reckon Tom Cunlifes documentaries were better. That bloke was a bit of an annoying twit.

Thats because you know more about what he is on about than he does. Try looking at the programme from a non sailors point of view. Lots of stuff for the uninitiated that they may find of interest. He did go up the mast to remove the hoist strap and appeared to be genuinely impressed with how a mild breeze pushed the heavy boat along. I think, from his other TV appearances, he was chosen because of his real interest in industrial archeology.

I enjoyed the programme, and so did Mrs R, who is not really into boats much at all. That trawler was massively built, and it was interesting to see the rope making process, which I had never seen before (and good to know that you can still buy natural fibre rope made in UK!). Presumably the concept that this rope was going to be used to tow her out, but not allowed anywhere near the actual rigging, was invented just to let him get in and about that rope works.

But the rope only had a 12ton breaking strain and Leader weighs 120 tonnes, oh my, will the rope break under the strain of Leader been towed out of the habour.......by the Paignton rowing club, lol.

I was on the edge of my seat watching........

Guy is definitely no Fred Dibnah, he simply doesn't have Freds' understanding of engineering nor does he have the same depth of knowledge and experience

That said though, and despite his slightly irritating vocal mannerisms, I'd rather see such programmes presented by a down to earth bloke who genuinely gets his hands dirty on a day to day basis rather than by some squeaky clean so called expert who just plays at it for the telly

It's not his fault that the programmes are a bit superficial, that's just typical telly for you.
