Depends on fuel tank (s) location, sender location within the tank itself and the attitude of the boat! Once the tank starts to empty and gets down to about half then if you are on the plane or running in displacement mode the volume remaining will vary greatly from showing almost empty to the real value.

My guage understates the amount of fuel in the tank. When it shows quarter full (ie 25 litres) the tank should take 75 litres to fill . In reality it only takes 60 litres of the red stuff.

My fuel gauge only works when there is less than 100 litres in the tank. It's more of a low fuel warning. The tank hold 1300 litres and I burn no more than a gallon an hour flat out.

Mine seems pretty good - at least I know I've still got fuel right down into the reserve area on the guage. Not like a certain forumite on here who recently found out that his guage showed half full when he was empty!

Great fun towing someone in a thunderstorm but good practice for the boat handling comp.

Mine understates fairly significantly 500 litre capacity showing half full but take only 90 ish litres to fill.

On the upside it does stick at half full for some time /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I have the best fuel gauges ever, sight gauges and a dip stick! Foolproof!

Ask Bejasus about electronic fuel gauges!

I can tell you to within 15 litres how much i have in a tank of 850 litres. I can predict ho much i will need to refil the tank.

About 2% error, not bad !

Tanktender Guages.

I will certainly fit them to my next boat.

www.nauquip.com/tanktender.html

I would like to point out that i have no Connection with Nauquip or tank tender other than as a satisfied customer.

Some of you may be aware that I ran out of fuel recently showing nearly 1/3 in the tank.
I adjusted the fuel sender and now have it so that it shows 1/4 with 10 litres and full with 40 litres in. The tank says 126litres on top of it, but miraculously I seem to get 140 litres in it at the fuel barge. Hmm.

I am saving up for a tank tender.

I assume that's a typo and you mean "full with 140 litres"

Sight gauges

Seconded, accept no substitute!
I only experienced them in the last years, but they're by far THE solution.
Just one recommendation, keep the fittings/valves well maintained and greased.
If you need to change the bottom fitting, it's really hard to avoid spilling diesel around.

I log fuel burn since last fill and calculate remaining fuel from that. I only using the tank guages as a rough guide and visual confirmation that the estimates are reasonable.

Like dipsticks.
Had to remove the fuel tank on my last boat.
So fully cleaned and replaced I poured in 5 litres ay a time and dipped.
Carving a line on me wooden dip stick each time.
Cos the tank was an irregular shape plus a Trap was involved the lines were not equidistant.
Baffled me for a bit that did!
Worked a treat and could not tell lies.
Not much chance of making one for My newer boat.
So we use a gauge.
"Gauge" --- to measure or ESTIMATE, sorry not shouting, don't know how to do that highlite stuff.
So the Question really is---"How accurate is Your Estimate thinghy"!
I gauge that most people estimate how much fuel they have left , then fill up when they estimate the gauge is showing an estimated amount left.
Gauging on past experience I have estimated I use 4 galls an hour and use this estimated figure to gauge when I need to top up.
Just as the gauge shows nearly full ,I stop filling case fuel spills out the breather.
I had an estimate for cleaning the hull once, cos staines of diesel looked orrible.
"Gauged on previous experience" said cleaning man.
I estimate the cost to be!" /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Actually it was reading just over a quarter full....

It took 20 litres from jerry cans and then 80 litres from a marina, and yes, it is a 100 litre tank /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Poxy Smiths gauges, no wonder they went out of business!! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
