Hi, my friend has owned a boat from new, bought in 2005 and his digital hour meters are not working on the rpm clocks, it's a sports cruiser fitted with Volvo Kad 43 engines, he is going to advertise it to sell as he never uses it.

I would be surprised if it has done more than 120 hours at a guess as it was me who drove it for him and I can count on two hands how many trips we did, the longest been from Fleetwood to the Isle of Man. Is there a device that could be used to find this out so we can advertise the hours accurately please.

You could change the engine hours module in the tacho without losing the previous figure and there are plenty of previous threads about how to do that. However, whether it would be worth doing just to sell the boat is another question. If the engines are so little used then that will be obvious and I doubt whether a prospective purchaser will be that bothered about the exact number of hours.

You could also try drying out the tacho using a hairdryer or similar or removing it and leaving in the airing cupboard or in a bag with some silica gel. This might return the display for a while so you can take a photo.

Thanks we will see if they are easy to remove, if not will try the hair dryer trick.

On KAD 43, there is no way to retrieve the hours from the engine, once the hour counters go in the tacho, unless there is a manual log these are gone forever.

On the VP EDC engines (KAD 44 et al), the hours are also retained in the EDC unit so can be read from there.

Oldish thread I know
The above statement is not correct
I just changed two of the hour counter displays. kad32's in my case .
The hours are retained including hours accumulated since the screens went blank.
