Hour Gauge Failed

The Hours run indicator for my engine has failed.

Engine is Volvo 2030 and the gauge in integrated with the taco.

Is this likely to be the gauge or the sender (not sure if there is one or how it gets a signal)

Is the digital gauge replacable or would it mean the whole panel replacement?

Alternatively, could a remote hours run gauge be fitted.

Any advice greatly received

Thanks

This is an extremely common problem and if you use the search facility you will find numerous threads all about volvo hours meters. One of our number who sometimes writes for PBO has done a project to repair the meter - skipper stu. Personally I bought a simple hours meter off ebay and installed that to the side of my instrument panel. Cost about £5 from memory.

You can often get the reading back temporarily by drying out the tacho in the airing cupboard, but its only ever temporary

Hours gauge is an LCD failure, and was the subject of a PBO fix it yourself article.

The Yanmar fix is to buy a new panel - err, no, not at £300.

Mine failed on my Yanmar, so I bought a mechanical gauge from RS components, and fitted that into the ignition circuit. Works a treat, under a tenner.

If you decide to workaround, a TinyTach can be fitted to almost any engine. It's sender is a clamp round an injector tube which detects it pulsing and gives revs and hours run. Appealingly simple and non-invasive addition to an engine.
