Does it matter which way round the feed and return from engine to hot water tank go, l took mine off months ago and cant remember. Its an upright tank with two fittings on the side plus the cold water feed. One is above the other about two inches apart.

Although the water will heat up whichever way the hoses are connected, however I believe it is common practice to fit the feed from the engine to the upper connection, and the return to the engine to the lower connection. This will also help improve the flow due to convection - hot water is less dense and falls as it cools. That is why the water at the top of a tank is hotter than that at the bottom.

The cold (fresh) water feed will enter the tank at the bottom.

A cautionary note: Take care that the connections to/from the engine are connected to the coil - otherwise the tank will fill with coolant from the engine!
