Having had a problem woth my portside stern gland I have cleaned the box and housing and changed the packing. Problem is that the Gland is getting hot when running. The other Box is ok with identical packing and installation. Any clues would be much appreciated

Too tight?

Slacken off. Retighten so that it just drips while it is running.

I am sure you've treated both glands the same so...
Possibly a bent shaft?
Possibly a collapsed engine mount so the power plant is 'resting' on the bottom of the gland?
Can you rotate both shafts by hand? Any difference in resistance?

If it's the type that has a greaser, too much grease can block up the water ways in the stern tube bearing prevent water from circulating whether it has a feed or not. Too much grease around the gland will also cause it to run hotter as grease is a poor conductor of heat.

I have a friend who is a marine engineer. if you can put your hand on it and keep it there he says it's not hot. obviously you have a difference between the two which needs investigating but i've always found his definition of hot useful for determining if there is a real problem or not.

It is to hot to keep hand in after 30 mins at idle speed so something is a wrong. I tried slackening off with no improvement.
Both shafts turn with same resistance. I was wondering if the could be contact between shaft and gland follower that would generate heat but I guess that would more obvious.
It could be a grease issues as suggested so will repack. Thanks all for inputs.
