There an article in PBO this month about the removal of hoses at yarmouth IOW due to a e-coli health warning. just wondering who in this country uses there own hose for filling up the tanks.. I know it's common practice across the pond to use your own pipe. but thinking about it now i've seen hoses at marina used for strange things other than filling and washing the boat. without going in to detail un blocking a toilet hose is one not to mention....

might just have second thought's next time i fill up

Most marina hoses get a good internal wash through frequent use, and as long as the outside of the hose that goes in the tank is given a good rinse off before using it I cannot see any problem. Compare that with a lay flat hose that I carry on board, its been in the bottom of a locker since last season and gets used maybe three of four times a year. Who knows whats growing in that?

Sorry Mr Sailorman, I cannot make out if you are, or are not, blaming the PM for infection in marina water delivery hoses.
Please explain /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Very useful thing H&S. Let's people get out of providing any service that's a nuisance for them.

But something had to be done about the high death-rate caused by people drinking water from marina hoses.

So the ban on smoking will save an estimated 20 lives a year. The Superbug problems kills over 5000 people a year. Could be millions killed by marina hoses, who knows? Maybe the govenment reacts in inverse proportion to the actual problem. Our sailing club had a visit from Southern Water last week and made comments on the water supply on the pontoon. No one mentioned E Coli, C.Difficile, MRSA, or the Man in the Moon.
Should we sue?

Not much fun using the marina hose after some boat-owner has used it to flush out her (usually) dog's shaggy rear end by shoving the nozzle right up. Not very nice if they just give the nozzle to the dog to drink from & lick.

I once talked to a Doctor who told me that he always used his own pipe for filling the water tanks and gave a comprehensive list of the things that could be contracted from a contaminated water supply.
He was actually filling up from a spring fed supply so I suppose that bollocksed most of his theory as it isn't subject to the same levels of chlorine or whatever else the water companies filter it through.
Anyway - you shouldn't drink too much water - fish fornicate in it

I almost, but not quite, warned a particularily obnoxious individual two weeks ago who 'instructed' me to hand him the hose so he could fill his tank while waiting for the lock to empty.

If he had been more affable I would have told him that Jack, the young black lab, had just spent a happy half hour chewing the end of it off.

Not sure if the raggie crew now has worms, but it was with a warm feeling of satisfaction that I watched them go on their way.

I always use my own hose for filling my water tanks, plus give it a damn good flush out before sticking it in the filler. I have also seen them used for all kinds of things, Yuck!

Ah-ha!
But don't you see the pattern emerging here? First it's marina hoses with their accursed infectious nature carrying Cholera Typhus and even worse! A plague could be upon us all before we know it, I mean who'd drink out of a tap? There could be Trenchfoot, Scurvy, Legionnaires all lurking just a slurp away!
Thank God for the Government - how they save us at every turn, and there was me thinking that the hose pipe ban every time there's more than 5 days of sunshine was them just being T*ssers - they're really saving us from ourselves!

And your point is?

What's the source of the "20 deaths", BTW?

Anyway, I suspect it's not actually the government to blame, but risk averse management at the marina who are scared of being sued by litigious customers.

At Gosport Marina, the older pontoons have hoses and the newer ones require you to supply your own. Perhaps we should analyse the morbidity and mortality statistics for both parts of the marina and compare. Anyone want to stump up to fund the research? I'd probably have to do it from my boat /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Well, apparently I'd say the source of the 20 fatalities per year would probably be the tap!
Presumably water on the brain, or death by a constant drip (oh sorry he's resigned, it's Gordo now).
Me, I'm drinking out of puddles - it's safer y'know!!
(I'm not mad Doctor, just unusual!).

I always use my own hose, I carry a water jerry can just in case the hose can't reach. I've seen far to many marina hoses plop into the sea, used to wash the dog, flush bilges etc. etc.

oh, me too, but the the jetskier drank from the hose, they all have potty mouths you know...

Actually Ive been filling up from filthy hoses for years, never did me any harm.

Though I did draw the line a few years ago when during the Antigua sailing week we were anchored up with about 200 other boats, all pumping straight out, and the skipper decided that washing the dishes in the seawater was a good idea! (Its the salt that makes it safe, apparently.)
/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif He runs a charter operation in the med now, no names.

A couple of us secretly washed up a second time after he went ashore.
