Horse accidents

there was something about this on the forum a while ago..

I think the discussion was about boating and alchol and also Liquid Vortex..

Anyway Necddies ae much more dangeous than sailboats..:)

There was very nearly a horse accident a couple of nights ago when I came across a stupid woman who was leading two horses along the road and not bothering with any lights. She objected to my use of the horn.

she has no excuse for absence of hi-vis kit or lights. In a bygone age one would perhaps have more sympathy with this:-

In effect, use of the horn punishes the rider/walker through the animals.

Normally I steer well away from horses and give them plenty of both distance and warning but, on this occassion, I came up against them very suddenly indeed (she and they were hidden under a railway bridge). The stupid woman didn't even think she had done anything wrong and was shouting that she had a flouresent jacket on. Nothing on her horses and no lights.

You're right though about "punishing" her. The intention was to get the message through to her which is why I elected to use the horn. Frankly, I didn't care if she or her animals get hurt but I do care that I could be hurt....I was cycling.

Agree the woman should have had some form of visibility ,but we do not no if the horses had got out, and she had not intended on being out at night with them, blasting one,s horn do,s not help when you have two large animals who,s instinct is to bolt for it at the slightest course for alarm

I live in an area where there are a lot of idiots on horses; it's very rare indeed to come across one with the brains to wear anything bright, they normally favour things like green and / or brown - they look all upset when I yell they're wearing camouflage !

You have a HORN on your bicycle???

Is it in of those big squeeze bulb things??

Or did you mean to say that you "gave her the horn"?

I believe it used to be an article of faith in the infantry that the behaviour of the cavalry could be explained by the corrosive effects of horse urine fumes on the human brain.

I very much doubt that the animals had got out as she was going through the middle of a village and she had found the time to put a fluorescent jacket on, .......but you could be right. However, even if that had been the case she could easily have tied one horse to a post, led the other to safety and then returned for the first beast. This woman was leading two horses, one on either side of her, so that even her hi viz was partially obscured by the animals.

She should have put hi viz on the animals, led them singly and used lights.

My last defence of this lady :) ,is that horses that live together don't like to be separated, and can be a handful when parted, but no reason not to have some form of visibility ,or move them in daylight,

:):):) I'm not a bloody horse psychologist! All I know is that they have four legs, an end that eats and bites, and an end that deposits manure on the road.............and once in a while they have owners who are stupid. :):)

I can't work out who was actually more stupid here. Her for not having any hi viz, or you for using a horn. That sir, is a sure way to spook a horse, and in that case someone (possibly you) will get hurt.

You may well be right but the fact remains that she was acting illegally and, like it or not, my use of a horn as a warning of approach was perfectly legal.

I don't mind the criticism and, in part, I accept it. More importantly, I just hope that she has learnt something and that she takes more care about how she leads her animals along the road in future.

Well... steady on, motor generation people...

I don't think there is any requirement for horses to show lights on the road (I may well be wrong, but...) they were there first and so have a moral as well as a legal priority. Cars don't have priority just because they are heavier, go faster and their drivers have bigger cojones (self evident apparently to 98% of car drivers).

Yes, some horse riders are ridiculously arrogant on the road, but ultimately they were there first.

Surely that counts for something?

Two wrongs don't make a right. He was DUMB to sound his horn. The horses could've bolted and injured the woman and/or themselves and/or caused an accident with another road user. Actually DUMB doesn't come close. From the tenure of his post stupid and vindictive with a side order of supercilious self righteousness is closer.
