Hooking AIS to Plotter

I have a new Garmin 750 plotter, great touch screen unit. Today I tried to input data from my icomMA-500TR AIS unit which is now 3 years old.
Can anyone give me some pointers, the icom outputs nmea0183, all my endeavours have failed!!

Fair point. The Garmin needs only to receive data so the connection is a single wire, the negative is taken care of by the common negative on the boat to which both units are connected. I took the '+ out' from the iCOM AIS which is pin 8 on port 2, this connected to the Garmin Violet which is port 2 '+ in'. Make sure both units are set to NMEA0183 and running at 38400, the Garmin refers to it as HS (High Speed)
