Noticed my Honda BF2 was hesitant when I opened the throttle last w/e. Also it was reluctant to start. It's 6 years old and I've always left petrol in it over winter so I reckoned I should clean out the carb float chamber. (ok, so I was bored) I've put it back together and it started first time. BUT it wont idle for some reason.

Now I'm pretty certain I've assembled it as it was EXCEPT for the float bowl. This is not symmetrical but there is no indication as to which way round it should go. HELP!

With modern petrol the classic is for the idle jet to block up with the gum left after the petrol evaporates. Does it every time on my motorbike, and I guess the outboard with an even smaller carb and an even smaller jet would be even more prone to this. So my suggestion would be an aerosol can of carb cleaner and some soft old fashioned fuse wire to make sure all jets and drilled passages are clear.

Next winter simply run the engine dry of petrol.

Apologies wotayottie, I missed your reply.

Trouble is the carb is so simple it's hard to see what could have changed. I've just stripped it down again and blown through every orifice. I'll try it again when the neighbours have finished their bbq.

Odd thing is, after searching the net last night and finding no info, now I've put the thing back together, I found this! Which even I can understand.

Is the idle jet the same as the pilot jet?
