Honda 2hp 4 stroke should I pass it on?

I have just taken this out of storage ready to pass on to the new owner of my old boat.

It went into storage 7 years ago with a drained carburettor and fuel tank.

I bought a gallon of super unleaded and filled it enough to give it a test.

Started first pull. Ticked over as smooth as silk. Clutch kicked in with a few extra revs.
That was the point at which I decided it was going.

What a bl**dy noisy racket they make once they are pushing a bit of load.

The plastics and paint look like new but oh dear the rusty mild steel fasteners make them look years old and I expect will snap off as soon as any serious maintenance is required.

Nah I am sticking with my 4hp Johnyrude which weighs the same.

I may be tempted to get my very low hours late model Tohatsu 9.8 out of storage if we go for a new SIB.

Am I wrong?

Depends what you agreed if he did not see the rude , send the Honda as they are shit .

The Honda is a superb engine that over many years has never let me down, and has been utterly reliable, predictable and safe with no signs of deterioration. If others judge them from a higher standard, it's my loss.

I bought a hardly used 2.3 from a pal about 15 years ago and it’s been kept in a shed ever since. I took it out of hibernation last Autumn (I posted about seized bracket screws at the time) and had exactly the same experience as you’ve described, Steve. A real shame about the low grade fasteners. After this time period, it does not look like an easy job to replace them ?

My usual outboard is a Tohatsu 2.5 2-st and I’m thinking of giving it a sabbatical this coming season such that I can try the Honda.

If I had to chose I’d probably stick with the Tohatsu but, of course, I can see an advantage with the Honda so I may change my opinion by the end of the season.

My vote would be to keep both ?

Send the Honda. I did. . New boat came with a 3.5 Merc 4T. That was a bit crap too. Replaced it with a 3.3 Merc two smoke. very happy now.

Had one new back in early 2000's. Never wanted to start and noisy when it did. Moving to a Mercury was a dream. Just give it the slightest pull and it was going.

No rust issues on ours but then it was freshwater use.

Always seems a shame so many people have rust issues one these. Being air cooled they seem ideal for salt water in principal.
