My brand spanking new outboard refuses to start - totally dead, not even a kick.

All the fluids levels are right, it is full of petrol, The fuel valve is open and I have fitted the kill cord and still no sign of life.

It came tested OK from Gaelforce but is now in Majorca so returning it would not be practical and I dont want to pay anyone out there for something that should be a simple fix - its not even as complicated as my lawnmower

Any ideas please?.

Martyn

Have you opened the air bleed at the top of the filler cap?
Mine needs the choke pulled at least half out (even in hot weather) and then starts first time even after leaving it with fuel in over winter.
4 strokes start better with a long pull on the cord rather than a fast short pull.
Best of luck

Have you got a spark?

Take out plug, reconnect lead and make sure plug body touches top of cylinder head, hearing a click (or viewing spark out of sunlight) as you gently turn engine over will confirm.

Have you kept engine reasonably upright? these Hondas, I have the same as you cept 2HP can let oil into cylinder if stored on side this can be V bad apparently.

My knowledge now dries up - good luck

Definitely oil in the combustion chamber. You need to keep the engine upright all times despite what the manual says. Cleaning the plug will clear it. Or even just taking it out and glaring at it usually works.

Also, beware when turning the engine round to go in reverse 'cos swinging the handle over bends the throttle cable thus reving the engine and engaging the clutch. Very alarming.

This sounds likely as the outboard was stowed on its side during transport to Majorca.

Any idea how I remedy this?

Thanks for the help

Pour a little neat petrol into the cylinder and turn over a few times with plug out, clean plug in petrol - bit dangerous but should help. disconnect plug whilst doing this to prevent stray spark igniting petrol spray
