I recently bought the new Honda 2.3hp 4-stoke outboard. I'm very pleased with it, but its extremely noisy! I wrongly assumed that 4-stroke meant 'refined quietness'. Does anyone else have one? Is it supposed to sound like a deranged lawn mower? Isn't the underwater exhaust also supposed to quieten it down?
Thanks,
Mike.

I think it's air cooled so the fan tends to make them a bit noisy (bit like an old Beetle I guess)

oops

Big mistake. As gtmoore says, aircooled = noisy. Remember, most lawnmowers whether deranged or not are aircooled 4 stroke, and they are as noisy as...lawnmowers.

The quietest outboards are 4 stroke watercooled. Then watercooled 2 stroke. Then anything aircooled.

You shoulda gotta 2 stroke watercooled. Big mistake, sorry.

Re: oops

Thanks (I think ?!?!). Its not too bad, just noisier than expected. Now that I know (I thought it might have an exhaust leak or something) I'll stop worrying about it, and start worrying about my boat engine again, which is what I do best of all. Come to think of it, thats very noisy too...

Bose solution

OK :-) If it gets bad, you can always try <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.bose.co.uk/noise_reduction/qc1_headphones/> these</A>.

They probly also work while mowing the lawn, running the main engines, getting SWMBO's reaction to your latest boat purchase, etc :-)

I have one too and yes its noisy but only when at or near flat out.

At slower speeds its not too bad?

Still pleased with it all the same and its more than compensated by the minimal fuel it burns and fact that the power output is more like a 3 than a 2hp.

Oh, I'm pleased - twist grip throttle, centrifugal clutch, excellent fuel economy, lots of power etc for not a lot of money. A lot noisier than a friends 3.3 2-stroke Mariner though, which surprised me.
