I have one of these 4 stroke units, 3 years old. Went to start it after a trip back to the boat the night before and it hasn't worked since. I've stripped the fuel side down four times now! Could it be the spark plug, do they just fail instantly with no warning??

Has anyone had a similar problem and how was it fixed. I have had problems getting a new plug to test as we are abroad, but now have one to take back with us, so before checking the electrical side l thought l would check with thhis geeat forum for ideas.

Don't know anything about that engine, but a 2.5hp is going to have VERY small jets indeed, both main and more especially the idle jet. You need to check that you have a spark first, assuming that is the case then it is almost certainly blocked jets or filter. When you stripped the carb was the float chamber full of fuel? I suggest you start (I assume here it is an integral tank under the cowling?) by disconnecting fuel pipe from carb and turning on fuel briefly to make sure fuel gets to that point, then leaving float bowl off reconnect and turn on again to make sure float needle isn't stuck.

Don't smoke during this operation or you'll be on the ten o'clock News!

If you prove fuel to the float chamber and prove spark you need then to remove carb and clean it properly and get it to an airline and blow it out with high pressure air, paying special attention to every orifice and piercing, especially the microscopic ones for idle in the choke tube.

Start by checking that you have a good spark from the plug lead.
Plugs can fail so yes change it if you have a good spark available.

If no spark then you have problem with the ignition BUT check the stop switch is not shorting out ... disconnect the leads.

Here's a useful document if you're stripping the carb. Mine always gets a blocked pilot jet. Having said that if I remember right it will still start with the choke open if the pilot jet is blocked. Or am I imagining this?

Sounds to me like it's got oiled up which they're famous for. Particularly if it's been lying on the wrong side in the back of the car. I find pulling the plug and turning it over with the fuel off never fails. As does having a beer and staring at it for a bit.

Tip: If it doesn't start after half a dozen pulls it's not going to start - unless you change something. Neighbour wandered over the other day while I was trying to start a flymo and pointed out the fuel tap was off. Bugger.

I spent ages trying to start my Honda, swearing quietly to myself then noticed the skill cord was hanging down...........................

Hello and thanks for that it looks good. How did you get the jets out, they seem v difficult to get at. I've blown through what l can but the pilot jet looks like the top breaks when it comes out (deliberately)? Did you have a replacement to put back?

A different 2.3 problem...

Sometime last summer my 2.3 started making a sort of scraping, dry sound when in gear and I suspected the clutch. I stopped using it but have only now had chance to take the thing apart. The prop was seized by now.

What a bloody faff it is to get to the clutch! You have to work your way through most of the outboard...

Anyway the clutch pads and centrifugal spring are fine, the problem is the clutch drum - that is connected to the drive shaft - has seized, I think the bearing is probably the culprit. I need now to try and get hold of a new drum and housing (I can't separate the two). Any ideas where might sell them?

You dont say where you are but you could start by putting your postcode into the "find a dealer" page of the website
