Hello,
I have a honda 2.3 air cooled o/b. I brought it home yesterday as I could not get it started, in fairness I had not used it this year and it sat in my garage all winter. Changed the petrol and cleaned out the carb now running OK and now ticking over sweet, however I cannot turn the prop. I removed the prop housing and drained the oil which was fine (no water) the hypoid gear all looked fine.

If I try by hand it wont move, with the engine running and revving it still wont turn although it sounds like the engine is working hard.
I was not all that happy last time I used it as it seemed that the centrifugal clutch was ''snatching'' but thought no more of it and thought as others have said that it was just the way they are!!

Any help apreciated.

Thanks.

I think Id assume that the vertical drive shaft has siezed in one of its bearings.

I dont have any details of the 2.3, only the 2hp. That appears to have a bush in which the drive shaft runs at the bottom end and a ball race at the top associated with the lower/outer part of the clutch.

I think if the 2.3 is similar to the 2 hp I'd be looking at those.

The bush must only be water lubricated, I think, so if you have not had it in tank of water perhaps a good soaking might help.

Spot on Vics!

There is a bearing just under the clutch drum. This has siezed solid now that I remember the OB did invert once when in Dartmouth. I think this is the cause. Also the drum where the small centrifugal shoes drive was rusty. I guess that is the snatching I was on about

I wont neglect it again!

Many thanks
