That looks like great fun. I was about to say it won't work but thought I'd better read the ;links first 
I didn't know there were SAR algorithms in the public domain but I guess it's only to be expected these days though seem pretty primitive. I think that's gong to be the limiting factor unless you've got experience in that area or are a lot cleverer than me (both entirely possible). Using it at sea you'll get a lot of clutter and even small wavelets will confuse it as they are constant random(ish) movement.
I'm a bit confused about the antennae - is he using the same antenna design for transmit and receive? I wouldn't have thought that was optimal unless he's using it to feed a parabolic reflector. Got to be worth a go though. I wonder how much a phased arrary dish is? That would really vamp things up.
