that's the only saving grace in this whole tawdry affair because, otherwise, the disbandment of the Black Watch regiment could not be conducted in an orderly fashion .......

Obviously they have to be home before christmas, because as bush sees his re-election as a mandate for his private war then we have to get our troops back in time to join bush on his invasions of iran and syria

Yes. I think there's some hasty rewriting going on, because the original, unequivocal "they'll be home by Christmas" has become "they'll still be home by Christmas, but some other poor b***ers may have taken their place".

Funny old business, language. /forums/images/icons/crazy.gif

Re: So what if they are..

..some other bugger will have had to take their place.

At least it's good to see that they've taken control of a larger area by crossing the Euphraties. They clearly don't intend sitting still and being targets.

I don't see why they don't just put down their weapons and have a few days of like our sulky armed coppers just did. Oh of course it's because they're up against a genuine threat.

Re: So what if they are..

Ah yes, but our boys in green won't shoot you for carrying a table leg!

The Americans would - they'd shoot you for standing near a table leg... or leaning on a table leg .... or looking like a table leg .... or and this is really the case in point, looking like someone who might be planning to carry a table leg, notwithstanding the complete lack of evidence that you had any table leg plans at all!

So there you have it - the Met are more like the US Army, than our Army is. Somehow, deep down, I always knew this - but I'm glad to have now reasoned it out so succinctly.

Apologies for the lighter note

The Black Watch, the US Rangers and the Metropolitan Police end up on the same survival exercise. After a day of yomping, camouflage, stream crossings and booby trapping, the colonel in charge of training tells them that their next objective is to go down into the woods and catch a rabbit for their supper, returning with it ready to skin and cook.

Night falls. First up - the Black Watch. They don night vision goggles, drop to the ground and crawl into the woods in loose formation. Absolute silence for 5 minutes, then the skirl of the pipes and they emerge from the woods, carrying a rabbit, neatly skewered up the Khyber by rifleman's bayonet. "Excellent!" remarks the colonel.

Next up - the US Rangers. They finish their cans of Bud, stub out their Luckies, turn off teh Jimi Hendrix, smear themselves with camouflage cream, do high fives all round, call up air, armour and artillery, fix bayonets and charge into the woods, screaming at the top of their lungs. For the next hour the woods ring with the sound of rifle and machine-gun fire, hand grenades, mortar bombs and blood curdling war cries. Eventually they emerge, carrying five wounded and two dead rangers, and the charred remains of one rabbit. "A bit messy, but you achieved the aim; well done", says the colonel.

Lastly, in go the coppers, walking slowly, hands behind backs whistling Dixon of Dock Green. For the next few hours, the silence is only broken by the occasional crackle of a walkie-talkie "Sierra Lima Whisky Tango Fanta One, suspect headed straight for you..." etc. After what seems an eternity, they emerge escorting a squirrel in handcuffs. "What the hell do you think you are doing?" asks the incredulous colonel, "Take this squirrel back and get me a rabbit like I asked you five hours ago!". So back they go. Minutes pass. Minutes turn to hours, night drags on and turns to day.

The next morning, the colonel and the other teams are awakened by the police, holding the handcuffed squirrel, now covered in bruises, one eye nearly shut. "Are you taking the piss!!??" asks the now seriously irate colonel. The police team leader nudges the squirrel, who squeaks: "I confess, I'm the f*ckin' rabbit."

Re: Earlier

Twister Ken
sorry but i find that thread just a little sick and insensitive.
Rightly or wrongly our chaps are out there to do a job.
My nephew was out there for six months and has thankfully returned safely.
Maybe the yanks are trying to rule the world but spare a thought for all those here at home with loved ones abroad.

Re: Earlier

Everybody with friends or relations out there has my sympathy, of course they do. As do the Iraqui people.

The inescapable conclusion is that our forces have been placed in harm's way for very spurious reasons by leaders who don't deserve our respect or our votes.

Whether those who die or are injured are British, American or Iraqui the blame for that lies not in Irag, but in Downing Street and the White House. Some of those who die will be British. Some of those will not see Christmas. It's appallingly sad. In a democracy, our recourse is free speech, protest and the ballot box and we should use all three.

Over 70 British personnel have come home 'early'. I have no idea how Blair and Hoon and the rest of the government manage to sleep at night.
