Came across this today. Not quite right in my mind. Was on an interesting forum though.

I've been on that forum as long as I have on this one. Interesting how the yellow circle "improves" the appearance a bit. I often thought a quick thrown together barge like this would make a good caravan sitting on a trailer that could also be used on water for that special trip. I was thinking along the lines of a couple of weeks going down the river Murray in South Australia for example.

:):D

yes, well the design is not that different from the River Cruisers made out of WW2 craft / pontoons that were open toped, with upright sides and flat bottomed.
All ply construction with strengthers along seams and joins.

in the imediate pre war years boats made from these WW2 craft were well evident on the Thames, as housboats, weekend retreats and cruisers, some powered by Seagull outboards.

all gave a lot of fun to many people when real boats did cost a lot of money :)

laugh not

Capt Popeye,

I expect you are aware that some such WWII based houseboats still survive at places like Bembridge, Shoreham etc.

Not sure if they are suffering an indignified end, or happily living out the peace they helped win...

thanks for that info - no did not know that - thought all the WW2 'homes' and 'boats' had dissapered long ago.

do remember, long long ago, in my yooof, seeing a community living on the edge of the 'saltings' at Felixstowe Ferry in WW2 relics, comprising Aircraft (without wings), Admiralty boats (without engines), and other relics, all were restricted by the High Tides for access.
interesting times :)

Capt Popeye,

I had a quick google for 'Bembridge houseboats', naturally no pics of what I was on about but a couple of references...

'Bembridge houseboats include a motor launch, some landing craft, two former patrol boats, one torpedo boat' (& more modern craft)

Next time I go to Bembridge I hope I have the brains to photograph these WWII craft before they really do go !

As well as quite a few MTB's, MGB's etc at Shoreham, the last time I was at Haying ( Island ) Yacht Co there was at least one large MTB houseboat.

My son has a friend, a fitter-up of Princess boats who may give him a hand with his fitting out - is this what we can expect?

PS Incidentally he made a fantastic job of fitting out my son's kitchen

Sadly quite a few of the newer ones aren't even boats, just odd-shaped houses on stilts looking far too new and expensive.

And you can stay in the WW2 gun boat, which has a lovely view, although the one time I stayed there, I found the headroom in the shower not what I'd prefer. From the days when men were men and sailors were dwarves. :)
